On Tuesday 18 November, Dreweatts will present the auction A View from Across the Atlantic: The Pamela Ford Collection. It is a privilege to bring to auction the collection of Pamela Ford, a discerning connoisseur whose vision and taste embody one of the most fascinating narratives in collecting history: the transatlantic dialogue between America and England. From the Gilded Age onward, a generation of collectors on both sides of the Atlantic forged identities through art and objects, often drawing upon European heritage to lend grandeur to the new wealth of American society, while English collectors reciprocally embraced American creativity and innovation.
Following in the tradition of Henry Clay Frick, JP Morgan, John D Rockefeller, Andrew Mellon and more recently Jane Wrightsman, The Ford collection extends this passion with remarkable clarity. It reflects the informed taste that defined the 20th century, when families and individuals cultivated their cultural standing through acquisitions that bridged continents such as Gainsborough's Blue Boy now at the Huntingdon Art Museum. This legacy remains alive, with transatlantic tastes shaping the art market and refining private collections. Pamela Ford’s Collection has, in turn, absorbed this historical current, assembling a group of important works by household 18th and 19th century artists and furniture makers from George Romney, Thomas Hudson and Allan Ramsey to Ince & Mayew, John Linnell and Blake.
